MARSHALL - Services for Liala Abel, 82, of Marshall will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church in Marshall. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service Monday at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery.
She died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at the Granite Falls Municipal Nursing Home.
Liala Beatrice Aune was born on May 16, 1926, in rural Hendricks, Minnesota, to Lars and Bertha (Digre) Aune. She was baptized and confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church in Hendricks. Liala attended and graduated from Hendricks High School, graduating in 1944.
Liala was united in marriage in May 1947 to George Arthur Abel, Sr., in Pierre, S.D. She was a homemaker and mother following their marriage. George passed away on June 8, 1970, and Liala went on to work at Lloyd's Coin Laundry. She spent 26 years working for the Marshall Independent newspaper. She retired in 2005 due to health problems.
Liala was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church at the time of her death. Her enjoyments in life included playing bingo, gardening, baking chocolate chip cookies, cooking, watching the Twins, listening to Elvis, collecting roosters, and spending time with family and friends, especially spoiling everyone at Christmas. She would save all year for a very special Christmas celebration.
She is survived by his six children, Shirley (and Ordell) Quail of Clear Lake, S.D., George, Jr., (and Barb) Abel of Marshall, Jim (and Bette) Abel of Marshall, Cindy (and Leroy) Jolstad of Marshall, Steve (and Vickie) Abel of Marshall, and David (and Jackie) Abel of Watertown, S.D.; 17 grandchildren, Lori Miller, Tony Quail, Stacy Quail, Jennifer Varpness, Troy Buysse, Shannon Abel, Robin Baartman, Alyssia Coudron, Jameson Abel, Cody VanOverbeke, Cassie Thares, Lisa Jolstad, Lori Jolstad, Matthew Abel, Laura Abel, Seth Abel and Erin Abel; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Barb (and Lawrence) Verkinderen of Minneota; nieces and nephews, Blayne Verkinderen, Bryce Verkinderen, Brianna St. Aubin, and Brooke Hilmoe; and many other relatives and friends.
Liala was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; grandson, Troy; son-in-law, Brian VanOverbeke; brother, Oliver Aune, and five other infant siblings.
