Bernie died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at the Avera Marshall Regional Healthcare Center as the result of a heart attack.
Bernie was born July 8, 1936, in Marshall, to Lloyd and Barbara (Kirchen) Archbold. He attended St. Joseph's Academy, and was the first graduate of Central Catholic High School in Marshall. Bernie then attended St. John's University where he was the quarterback for his beloved "Johnnies." After graduation, he returned to Marshall where he began a 40+ year career as a district agent with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. On June 18, 1960, Bernie was united in marriage to Carol Stephan in Long Prairie.
There was nothing more important to Bernie than his faith in God, Carol his wife, their five children and 17 grandkids. Every new day was full of excitement and adventure, from coffee and a donut at Hy-Vee to an African safari. Making friends, helping others and traveling the world were his driving forces. His enthusiasm for golfing, fishing for "whoppers," hunting, playing cards and a Lake Sarah sunset were rivaled only by his passion for St. John's football, Holy Redeemer Church and school, and his Northwestern Mutual connections. Bernie also took great pride in his community and served many organizations including the Jaycees, Toastmasters, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, City Council, Parish Council, Holy Redeemer Board of Administration, the Marshall Golf Club Board, Marshall Hospital Board, RCBV Board, Life Underwriters Board, District Agent Chairs, St John's University Alumni, Lyon County Heart Assn, Holy Redeemer Foundation, SSU Foundation, Central Planning and Giving Committee. He received many awards for his service including the Distinguished Service Award, the G. Bennet Serrill award and induction into the Pride in the Tiger Hall of Honor.
Survivors include his wife Carol of Marshall; children Tim (and Julie) of Arden Hills, Pam Kuhr of Prior Lake, Tom (and Jackie) of Plymouth, Dave (and Kim) of Peachtree City, Ga., Jane (and Todd) Bock of Marshall; 17 grandchildren, twin brother Jim (and Nancy) of Marshall; sister Joanne (and Jim) Bean of Rohnert Park, Calif., sister Bonnie (and Carl) Jack of Anchorage, Alaska, brother Mike of Carson City, Nev., brother Steve (and Nancy) of Bloomfield, Neb.; sister-in-law Sarah Archbold of Marshall; and many other friends and family.
