Volunteers heading to water areas this weekend in Swanson search
By Rae KrugerMARSHALL - Volunteers, search and rescue dogs and cadaver dogs will search the water areas near the Yellow Medicine River in Lincoln County this weekend in search of Brandon Swanson, his father Brian Swanson said Friday.
"We won't do any foot searches." Brian Swanson said. "The grass and nettles are six feet high or taller, it's useless to try and walk through it."
Swanson, 19, of Marshall has been missing since May 14.
A cell phone call between him and his parents ended abruptly while his parents were searching for their son and his car near Lynd. Swanson told his parents his car had gone into a ditch near Lynd, but later, through a cell phone tower trace, his car was discovered in a ditch along the Lincoln and Lyon County line near Taunton, which is at least 10 miles north east of Lynd.
SAR dogs and cadaver dogs have shown interest in several areas of Lincoln and Lyon County near the Yellow Medicine River in the past two months of searches.
"We're going to focus on the areas of the Yellow Medicine River and close to it that have interest points," Brian Swanson said. "Areas where the dogs have shown interest."
Swanson has a record of results from hundreds of hours of searches in the past two months. While dogs have shown interest in several areas, walkers, all-terrain vehicle searchers, searchers on horseback, boat searches and others have found no items belonging to Swanson.
Brian Swanson said eight teams of SAR and cadaver dogs and other volunteer searchers will look in areas "they've not done as aggressively as before."
A copy of the search records show searches have been in areas of Lincoln, Lyon and Yellow Medicine County near Porter, Taunton, spillways, abandoned farms and other sites.
A search and rescue team from Texas had indicated it would help in the search a few weeks ago, but after additional investigation, the team decided not to come, Brian Swanson said. The Texas team said they wouldn't do anything different than searchers had already done or were continuing to do, Brian Swanson said.
Searchers are meeting at 8:30 a.m. at the Taunton Fire Hall today and Sunday.
Brian Swanson said his family has appreciated the use of the fire hall and the many volunteers who continue to help search and those who have donated or helped in other ways.

“Taunton, which is at least 10 miles north east of Lynd”. Excuse me? Taunton is 23 miles northWEST of Lynd, as the crow flies.
