St. Edward’s students back at school after reactions to vaccine

By Deb Gau
POSTED: May 22, 2008
MINNEOTA — Several students at St. Edward’s Catholic School who experienced reactions from a vaccine on Monday have recovered and are back in class, St. Edward’s Principal Lori Rangaard said Wednesday.

Rangaard said the sixth-grade class received tetanus-diphtheria shots administered by the school nurse on Monday.

About 15 to 20 minutes after the vaccination, some students began showing symptoms like paleness and dizziness, Rangaard said. Four students were taken to the hospital.

“All of them were treated and released the same day,” Rangaard said.

Parents were notified of the incident, she said, and school was waived for the sixth-grade class that day.

“Some parents took kids to see their family doctors, and they were OK,” Rangaard said.

All the students were back in school on Tuesday.

The St. Edward’s school nurse used vaccine obtained from Lincoln Lyon Murray Pipestone Public Health Services, Rangaard said.

Rita Dovre, interim director of nursing at LLMP Public Health, said Wednesday that Public Health had contacted both the Minnesota Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about the reactions.

Both organizations are investigating the incident.

“Right now, they can tell us that it’s a very rare happening,” Dovre said.
