CLARA CITY — Broken records, personal bests, lost shoes — the Camden Conference track meet had it all on Thursday in Clara City.

With the weather actually cooperating, many athletes turned in top performances Thursday at the Camden Conference track meet in Clara City.

The Canby-Minneota girls won the meet with 177 team points. The Lancers were followed by RCW (158), RTR-LH/LB (64), CMCS (60), Lakeview (42), MACCRAY (31) and TMB (22).

C-M’s Dana Kraus won the 1600-meter (5:57.68) and the 3200-meter (12:32.23) runs.

According to C-M head coach Ben Miska, Kraus has run very well all year. “She turned in a little slower time today, but she’s been pretty consistent in that 5:50 range,” said Miska. “Most meets, she’s been in the top three for both the mile and two- mile. I’ve been very pleased with her. She’s only a freshman and I’m looking for her to continue to improve and build toward subsections and then get to sections.”

Teammates Erin Kamrath and Lindsay Full usually place close behind Kraus. Kamrath placed second in both distance events, while Full finished fourth in the 3,200 and fifth in the 1,600.

“I try to work hard,” said Kraus. “It’s been going pretty good this year. I just want to do my best and keep improving my time. It’s great to have the three of us in the distance events. We all work really hard together.”

Both Kamrath and Full have been running well, said Miska.

“Erin’s been a good No. 2 to Dana all year. Erin got sick for True Team and Lindsey ended up running in her place,” Miska said. “She ran her best time in both the mile and two-mile. She’s been able to build off that confidence.”

“They’re good kids to coach. If you ask them to do something, they’ll do it, no questions asked. I’m proud of the performance they’ve had (Thursday) and all year.”

The C-M 4x800 relay started the meet off with a first-place finish (10:38.29). Team members were Thea Merritt, Katherine Anundson, Kaitlyn Oellien and Caitlin Slaba.

Lauren Beukelman took first in the 400-meter dash (1:00.74).

In the 800-meter run, Anundson took first (2:28.85), while Riley Nordgaard finished second and Merritt third.

Jo Schmitz was first in the shot put (36-0), while Christine Adamietz was second and Elise Citrowske fifth.

To end the day, C-M won the 4x400 relay (4:16.80) with the help of Chelsea Deslauriers, Nordgaard, Anundson and Beukelman.

RTR won the 4x200 relay (1:50.57). Team members were Brittany Gravley, Jade Possail, Justine Gifford and Krista Johnson.

Kristine Peterson led the RTR triple jumpers as she took second place. Jenae Minett took third, while Wendy Anderson finished fourth.

“I was really happy with Kristine getting over the 32-0 mark again,” said RTR head coach Ted Kern. “She’s been getting a little bit down lately. It was good to see her do that. The two eighth- graders that finished behind her are doing some nice things here at the end of the year and that’s good to see. They both jumped their best of the season.”

On the boys side, MACCRAY took top honors with 176.5 team points. The Wolverines were followed by TMB (170.5), C-M (66), RCW (52), Lakeview (41), CMCS (27) and RTR-LH/LB (19).

The Panthers continued their winning streak in three of the four relays. In fact, they broke three meet records in all except the 4x800.

The 4x200 (1:32.03) was run by Jun Kondo, Josh Hook, John Swenhaugen and Drew Nelson. The 4x100 team, consisting of Hook, Kondo, Swenhaugen and Brandon Kirk, broke the old record with a 44.41. Swenhaugen, Steve Paradis, Ryan Tholen and Nelson put together the winning 4x400 team (3:30.59).

The 4x800 relay finished in second place with the help of Walker Schaar, Sam VanNevel, Fernando Silva and Jesse Miller.

In addition to assisting two winning relays, Nelson grabbed two first-place finishes on his own. Nelson won the triple jump (40-4) and the 400 dash (51.10).

Nelson is a veteran on the 4x200.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Nelson said. “We take a lot of pride in our handoffs and we’ve done really well today. It’s carried over to the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. A lot of the same guys run in the relays. Everyone was handing off and running good today.”

Nelson, who lately has been battling flu, strep throat and an ankle problem, doesn’t seem to let anything stop him from competing.

“It’s been hard to catch my breath,” said Nelson. “ I just hope everything will fix itself and will all be perfect for Subsections.”

Tholen won the 1,600 (4:40.16) and the 800 (2:03.30).

Dalton Kirk swept the hurdles races by winning the 110 hurdles (15.69) and 300 hurdles (43.62).

VanNevel finished first in the 3200 (11:25.33).

In the pole vault competition, which took place on Wednesday at Lakeview High School, Hook placed first with a vault of 12-0. Most likely due to the previous poor weather conditions, quite a few competitors vaulted their season-best, including Hook.

For Lakeview, Nathan Girard won the long jump (19-9).

“This was my personal best today,” said Girard. “Before this, 18-5.5 was my furthest jump. It feels pretty good. It was just a good day. I’m glad that all the practice and hard work has been paying off.”

Girard, a junior, has goals of hitting 20-0 this season and to make it to sections.

“Nathan’s jumps have been doing really well,” said Lakeview head coach Eric Lundberg. He’s won a lot of meets and is almost always in the top three. He also does triple jump, high jump, and most recently, shot put. For subsection, we’ll have to decide which three field events he’ll do. He’s a natural athlete, but he works hard too.”

One of the best races of the day was the boys 800. As the fast pack came around the second curve in the first lap, a runner fell and caused one of Jacob Cheadle’s spikes to slip down past his heel. Cheadle, a freshman from C-M, eventually kicked the shoe off and ran the remaining 450 meters in his sock. He finished in second place behind Tholen.
