BEIJING (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden says China's recent, sudden announcement of a new air defense zone has caused significant apprehension in the region.

Speaking in Beijing, Biden says he was very direct in meetings Wednesday with Chinese President Xi Jinping about U.S. concerns but also U.S. expectations for China.

Biden says in those meetings, he put the issue in the broader context of America's relationship with China and China's role in the region.

Biden says China bears increasing responsibility to contribute positively to peace and security. He's calling on China to take steps to reduce the chances for accidental conflict and miscalculation. He also says China should refrain from steps that would increase tension.

Biden spoke to American business leaders in China on his last day in Beijing.
