The soil has been destroyed because of all the un-natural chemicals, sprays and fertilizers that farmers have become dependent on using. The fields will never be the same, all the natural goodness that soil once had is GONE. Crops will not grow without all the toxic fertilizers. I see this first hand since I work for a company that tests the soil. All of the soybean and corn is highly toxic with no nutrition in these crops whatsoever, so I'm blown away how much corn by product is in so much of what we eat and drink. My family avoid eating anything with corn or corn syrup in it. If u want to eat corn find a health piece of land, buy your sweet corn and fertilize the soil with sheep manure. The sheep must eat from pastures with different types of grass. No grain fed sheep. Do NOT spray! EVER! Getting the soil as organic as possible is key and takes time. Testing the soil is easy but resesrch this first. BTW Monsanto is the monster that has caused all of this. The honeybees hit hardest!
