Renovate? Rebuild? City hall’s future in limbo

n Task force begins mission to figure out what to do with Marshall’s deteriorating, half-century-old municipal building

January 25, 2014

MARSHALL — It wasn’t going to fix any of the problems with Marshall’s city hall building just yet, but it was a start, said members of a task force that had its first meeting Friday morning....

Mike Boedigheimer hit the nail on the head. Marshall has a pattern of letting public buildings deteriorate rather than maintaining them, and then replacing them. The middle school and the court house are examples that come to mind. Trying to find an old public building that reflects the town’s heritage is very difficult. Does that make sense economically? I can’t answer that one.

Agree with Mr. Boedigheimer and Mr. Bayerkohler. If my house has issues with plumbing, heating and air conditioning etc., you fix or replace. It's part of routine maintenance and upkeep of a property. It would be interesting to know the "trouble spots" identified in the 2006 building study and what items city staff, especially Mr. Olson, have brought to the council requesting repairs/replacement and what,if anything has been done in the past 14 years. Contrary to what Mr. Martig stated, some city staff have been clear about wanting a new building.

Absolutely NO mention of the fact that the bat-and-rat infested Hotel Marshall is right next door? HILARIOUS!!!

Realistically, the Hotel Marshall should be part of the discussion-planning process. Something has got to happen with that eye sore.

No mention of city hall being almost completely inaccessible, pretty much zero parking as well. Should've bought East Side School.

Dearest City of Marshall:

Once upon a time a local huckster, I mean architectural genius, “M. Lenny” spent a few bazillion dollars to erect an elaborate building he named Landmark Mercantile. Since then, the Mercantile has been home to many spiders and dust bunnies. Occasionally, a few Schwan employees visit for a holiday meal. City of Marshall, this fine structure is but a stone’s throw from your current municipal building. Perhaps you could check into whether the spiders and dust bunnies would like a little company? Give M. Lenny a call – I doubt he’s very busy.

Signed, All-knowing Soothsayer

In regards to Councilmember Boedigheimer's comment: "There has been a deliberate attempt by city employees, past and present, to do nothing to this building so they could build a new one,"

I sure hope that these employees have been terminated or will be immediately? They should be barred from employment in any municipal job.

Bravo Mr. Boedigheimer!

It is great this was mentioned, but it now seems critical to get that fixed. There is no way that an employee should earn income from taxpayers and then 'sabotage' the facilities they have been given by the taxpayers and are purported to use and care for that facility. Find these folks - and escalate the process leading to termination.

Mr.Boedigheimer be careful when you throw accusations. If you really know this is the case with City workers than bring your evidence forward and fire them. If you don't have it or don't have the guts to fire them, then keep quiet.

Maybe Mike can start investigating by looking in the mirror. This isn't his first term.
