Keep the faith

January 3, 2014

To the editor: We all have heard of the priest molestation of children. Most of the accused priests are dead. The ones that are living have been expelled from the Catholic church....

No bullying intended, alex. Blindly buying into a religion/cult is ron's choice. Trying to convince everyone else we need to buy into that choice is where I disagree. I appreciate your idealistic views, but since ron felt the need to give me his opinion, he should be willing to receive mine back.

I'm sorry, but I just can't imagine "the shoes" being so torn & battered from experience that they warrant the hateful bullying of another human.

Yes, it's bullying.

Hold your views, that's all fine & dandy. In fact, if I had to pick a side, I'd probably lean YOUR way on this particular issue. But what's so awesome about all of this is that I can think Ron's a nice guy AND wrong at the same time!

Let me demonstrate: "Ron, I like you, pal! But I disagree with you here. I think you're way off. Here's why..."

See how easy that was?

One more thing: Don't have time for radical extremism? Don't spend so much of it beating down "losers" like us.

alex, keep on judging when you haven't walked in the shoes... I don't have time for radical extreme statements from someone such as Ron.

Commonman, that's really cool. You have some experiential & relational credibility to bring to the table. Kudos.

Still doesn't justify comments like "loser" being thrown around literally in the first words you type.

Whatever happened to respectful, constructive, proactive discussion despite opposing views?

Note: I'm not a Roman Catholic. I barely even know any details about the scandals that have rocked the church. But the man isn't a "loser" for professing a particular set views -- no matter how "wrong" he may be. Rather, he's an articulate being who deserves the same amount of respect you probably demand for yourself.

To the five nameless individuals who "agreed" with Commonman's initial comment: shame on you for condoning any behavior like this. Come. On.

alex, as a troll who lived through the catholic church's total abuse of faith and guilt, not to mention a friend of those who were victimized, I can say you don't know what you're talking about. Blind devotion only means you ignored other's suffering for your own benefit.

You don't need organized religion to praise God. Just because people have lost faith in a church that has often violated its own teachings doesn't mean they've necessarily lost faith in God. Matthew 18:20 makes it pretty clear you don't have to be in a church to be in God's presence.

The Catholic church has done serious damage to the Catholic church, not the news media. You make it sound as if things have been blown way out of proportion, when in reality it is clear that the public is only just now beginning to get a glimpse of just how big the scandal is.

Seriously? A "loser"? It's trolls like commonman who prevent discussions like this from getting anywhere worth going.

Disagree with the claims, try not to attack the man's character. It reflects poorly of your own.

I think Ron is a loser who blindly believes what the church tells him. I know people who were molested and at that time all we knew is that it was supposed to be a privelege to be allowed into the rectory alone with the priest. Parents were too trusting and children too naive. Trust no one.
