Hostas are great plants that love the shade. They can be split and planted elsewhere and that is what we have done to expand our plant beds over the years. They look good next to ferns and we have some woods poppies that have a yellow flower in the spring. Shade is a challenge but you can have a wonderful garden. You do have to do a little more watering as the shade plants compete with the trees and shrubs they are growing under.
