Thank you Mr. Richards & Mr. Kjergaard for explaining that there are legitimate uses for "AR" style guns and large magazines. These aren't just for right-winged looneys and deranged killers - they are a sporting guns with a purpose.

Who the heck do these politians think they are! I remember and still hate George H Bush's executive order to ban assult weapons in '89 and then Ronald Regan after he was prez helped propose, write, lobby for and help PASS the '94 assult weapons ban & now this Obama guy proposes almost the identical assult weapon ban as that socialist Reagan did! Once again who do this guys think they are?! They can't take away our constitutional rights to have guns!

Steve Browne, you are proving to be a liability to truth and meaningful journalism.

Assault weapons have one very distinguishing characteristic: They are weapons with select fire capabilities. Meaning full auto, burst and semi auto. Every sporting rifle referenced in this article has something that sets them aside from assault rifles: two firing settings that consist of "safe" and "fire". The same as Grandpa's pheasant gun.

Do you get paid more for distortions, or is this a personal agenda thing?

Jamesj, I agree with your position, but your facts are wrong. Ronald Reagan was no socialist far from it. In fact President Reagan refused to ban any firearms even after being shot in an assassination attempt. His secretary James Brady was also injured in the attempt, and his wife has been trying to take our guns ever since. Mr Reagan was presented with legislation to ban certain weapons he refused saying he didn't have the right to take other peoples rights away. The "assault weapons" ban wasn't signed till 1994 by Pres. Clinton. Unfortunately for us the same idiots are still there and will try to ram it down our throats again.

Well stated, Prodigal. Seems like there are quite a few people out there that don't know the difference between an assualt rifle, an assualt weapon, and grandpa's gun.

*Krunch* I believe u need to do some research. Regan did help with the '94 ban after he was Prez like was stated in my previous post! He specifically wrote a letter to the 'House' urging republicans to vote for the ban! Some Repubs changed there vote because of Reagans influence. Reagan also wrote an op ed "Why I'm for the Brady Bill". He helped propose, write, lobby for and help PASS the '94 assult weapons ban PERIOD! SORRY but Reagan was a staunch socialist! He was totally committed to his cause of wealth redistribution to the Rich! The wealthy got huge tax cuts across the board. following the tax cuts, deficit and inflation soared! (Sounds Like what 'W' did) then recession hit' the worst since great depression -@ that time-. Then Reagan increased payroll tax and robbed from social security to pay down his deficit all with no tax increases on the wealthy!then he cut taxes on the wealthy again all while the poor and middle class taxes went up&Reagan left us with a defic

I am going to suggest for all of you democrate, republican, independent who voted for Obama to take all your ammo and guns to local Police to aid this man in his venture to disarm this country. I turned my Red Rider in yesterday and I didn't even vote for him.

Is seems having minimal knowledge of the English language is not necessary for an opinion to be considered but in-depth knowledge of guns is required for comments to be considered. Is that how it works Prod and Mcgrady? Gee, lets ban everything but muzzle loaders.

After reading the various comments so far, I feel SO much safer knowing some will be carrying loaded guns with them everywhere they go. (anyone note the sarcasm?)

Jamesj. I better do some research if what your stating is correct. I honestly never remember Reagan being in favor of weapons bans. I do remember that by 1994 Reagan had been diagnosed with alzheimer's. I know by experience how that cruel disease can change someone you love into a stranger. A question for you, if you honestly think Reagan was a socialist what would you call the current white house resident?

I guess all these gun toting people are willing to volunteer their time to guard every school, post office, movie theatre or other business place against the loony who gets ahold of a gun. Owning a gun sould no longer be a right, but an earned privelege.

Hartman, one should know about the topic before spouting off. Most need education on the difference between an assualt rifle and an assualt weapon, they are not one in the same.

""I don't understand," Kjergaard said. "When a drunk kills somebody with a vehicle, they blame the drunk. I never knew a rifle to get up in the morning, load itself and shoot somebody." "

There is a similarity, however. A DWI conviction has never stopped a drunk from obtaining another car and driving.

A gun ban will never stop a criminal or psycho from obtaining another gun.

In both cases, it is the person doing the crime, not the inanimate item, whether it be a vehicle or weapon.

Best thing: REPEAL THE SECOND AMENDMENT and folks need to stop thinking they are constitutional scholars because they are members of the NRA and watch TV

Melt all the guns into shovels and hoes and prove your manhood by starting a garden. Or turn them weapons into bicycles.

Get more exercise - you need oxygen, not bullets.

Maybe you should just stick to reading for a while on this one. So far, all you've contributed is high pitched hysteria totally void of reason. I'm trying not to judge you harshly, as I know some disorders like Hoplophobia [mental aberration consisting of an unreasoning terror of gadgetry, specifically, firearms] are insidious and can be compounded by things like a bad reaction to THC, leading to acute panic anxiety. Give yourself a few day break from the herb and see if things aren't better.

I really wish I still had my HK-93, so I could sell it to one of these paranoid lunkheads for 10x what I paid for it. Alas, I sold it decades ago, because while it was a fine weapon, I really didn't have any practical use for it, which is pretty much true of any of these types of weapons outside of police and military use.

OK Hartman heres what socialism is. A theory, (failed everywhere it's tried) of the ownership and operation of the means of production and distribution by the state (ie government) with all members sharing (unequally) in the work and the products. How bout communism, A theory or system of common ownership of property, socialism as formulated by Marx and Lenin. Sound kinda similar don't they, but of course someone as brilliant as you already knew that. So which one best describes you, or maybe your more of a national socialist type. Since you seem to enjoy impugning anyones intelligence who doesn't agree with you, lets go back to one of your former comments and you can explain in detail just what an "artillery style" handgun is. We all know you don't like firearms Hartman but your completely unarmed in a battle of wits also.

Being so rigidly afraid of some simple measures to limit gun types in an effort to make our country safer is alarming. I do believe intelligence will eventually prevail over paranoya.

common - you limit what you do - leave the rest out of it.

As usual Nobama doesn't have a good, comprehensive plan - no Chicago, no drug gangs, etc.
