Ranger, get out your checkbook and send a donation to Tyler High School, backpack program. No child deserves to go hungry for any reason. A child can not be responsible for his parent's choices or financial situation. Your fear that someone might get something they do not deserve disgusts me. The only 'but' is you and yours deserves a good boot.

Yes Al, some parents absolutely*****at both parenting and being productive members of society in general. That's still no reason that any kid should go hungry in one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
If your local school doesn't have a program like this I would suggest talking to your school social worker or school counselor. They generally have a pretty good handle on how many kids are going without...without food, without appropriate clothing, without adequate heat.

Great program - but at the same time there are those taking advantage, spending their money on tobacco, alcohol and drugs while their children don't get enough food to eat.

Congratulations RTR students for reaching out to those in need. No student, no person, should have to go hungry in the USA. This is a very positive reflection on the RTR communities, schools, families, and young people. It makes me proud to be living in SW MN. Thanks Deb and the Independent for publishing this upbeat article.
