Firming things up

Attorney John A. Engels and his wife Amanda have been working to turn the old Minneota Medical Center into a law office. Once the final details like furniture have been worked out, John will move his law practice there, while Amanda takes care of some of the clerical and secretarial work.
MINNEOTA — It’s been a long time, but John Engels says he’s finally getting the chance to go into business in his hometown.
Engels is a Minneota native, and now lives with his wife Amanda and children in rural Taunton. But for the past several years, he worked in Tyler as part of the Petersen and Engels law firm. The idea to move his practice to Minneota had been “kicking around in my head for years,” he said, but he never found the right opportunity.
When Engels was deployed to Iraq in 2006, opportunity was waiting for him after his return. He learned there was space available in the former Minneota Medical Center building.
“I came back and I had to rebuild anyway,” he said, so it seemed like an appropriate time to make the move. “It’s well located, and it’s a decent size.”
But it wouldn’t be as simple as just moving in. The old clinic space had a lot of small rooms and extra sinks and plumbing Engels didn’t need.
