Vikings make a strong first impression

MINNEOTA — Even the No. 1 team in Class A showed it wasn’t immune to first-match jitters, but the Minneota Vikings played well enough Tuesday to cruise past visiting Murray County Central 25-14, 25-22, 25-13. The Vikings got a little tight at the end of their second set, allowing an 8-0 Rebel run that reduced their lead to 24-22, but Minneota closed out the set when two MCC players bumped into each other trying to play the ball. Minneota head coach Stephanie Hennen admitted her team made more mistakes than she would have liked, but at this early stage of the season, she said that’s something to be expected. “I think we had a lot of people with first-match jitters. And even if it wasn’t jitters, it was a nervous kind of excitement,” said Hennen, who coached the Vikings to a Class A runner-up finish last year. “We were shaky a little bit on serve-receive passing and jerked our arms a little bit, just things that we normally wouldn’t do.
