Faith in Action
In an article in Episcopal Life Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church wrote about the Five Marks of Mission, ways in which we live our baptismal covenant. Normally mission might call to mind something far away, something we send others off to do, or support with our contributions. But the Bishop has another take on it. Mission, she says, means "sending," and she holds that as Christians living out a baptismal covenant we are all missionaries partnering in building the Reign of God. She believes that in daily life, each one of us gets countless opportunities to engage in mission activities. The Five Marks of Mission are to: • Proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom n Teach, baptize and nurture new believers. • Respond to human need by loving service. • Seek to transform unjust structures of society. • Safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.
