No More Plastic Bags, Part Deux
Fri, July 18, 2008 @ 2:57PM
C’mon, people! I don’t see anyone using those reusable tote bags! I know I look good swingin’ my lime green Hy-Vee tote! Today, it held a gallon of milk, a large bag of cheddar puffcorn, and a loaf of bread. Plus, I got 5 cents off my grocery bill. I grabbed my tote and headed for my car. Didn’t need to mess with a cart for this quick trip to the store. Didn’t need to worry about the plastic bag breaking. I want to see more shoppers using reusable tote bags in the grocery stores! (Actually, I haven’t seen any!) Some cities are banning plastic bags entirely. Let's start using fewer plastic bags! Don't make me have to write a "No More Plastic Bags, Part Tres" blog!

If Heath Ledger Doesn't Win an Oscar...
Fri, July 18, 2008 @ 2:44PM
...I will never go to another movie again. Last night I attended the midnight showing of “Batman: The Dark Knight” and it lived up to every expectation. Ledger as the Joker was truly phenomenal. Every conception I have ever had about a good villain was changed with his performance. Not only did he read his lines to make them believable, but he fell into the character so much that I couldn’t tell where Heath ended and the Joker began. If it had been a no-name, first-timer instead of a world-class famous actor, I would have never believed the guy was sane in reality and would have thought that in order to portray a madman so well, he would have to be a madman himself. From the way he moved to his facial expressions to the constant creepy lip-licking to the violent shaking, Heath was the Joker in every sense of the word. Now I understand what they meant when they said Heath had issues during and after filming directly before his death.

Thank you, Mr. Turtle
Thu, July 17, 2008 @ 12:37PM
It doesn’t take long for kids to get bored during the summer. You parents know what I mean. Two days after school gets out, we hear it: “I’m booooored.” “There’s nothing to do.” But it also doesn’t take much for kids to become totally entertained, and sometimes, we, as parents, don’t even have to do anything. Take Thursday morning, for example. After a nasty thunderstorm rolled through Murray County, my daughter Olivia and son Austin did what any kid would do after a storm — they went outside. Why? Because it was wet and muddy, and kids, especially country kids, are drawn to water and mud like I’m drawn to Sportscenter. While outside getting themselves soaked, they came upon a turtle, now considered by me as the one of the best sources of entertainment for children in the world. Turtles aren’t very active on land, but put them in a snow sled that has been filled to the top with rain water, and it’s a different story.

As The Bud Turns
Wed, July 16, 2008 @ 2:20AM
We kept waiting around the office Tuesday night into Wednesday morning for the All-Star game to get over with. Since deadlines are important in the newspaper business, we had to send the pages out around 12:25 p.m. last night. About 10 minutes later, the game was over when the Rangers’ Michael Young drove in the Twins’ Justin Morneau with the winning run in the bottom of the 15th to give the AL its 11th straight victory in the game. It was quite a game, from what I saw over my shoulder any way. FOX commentators Joe Buck and Tim McGarver kept saying the game might end in a tie, just like in 2002. Red Sox and AL manager Terry Francona was down to his last pitcher in Tampa’s Scott Kazmir, and was only going to allow him to throw a certain amount of pitches. Kazmir apparently was on short rest. If a tie had happened, commish Bud Selig would’ve had that same deer-in-the-headlights look he had back in 2002.

When Mom calls at work
Thu, July 17, 2008 @ 4:12PM
When your mom calls you at work, it usually isn’t good news. Well, when my mom calls me at work, it usually isn’t good news. Yeah, my mom has a hard time getting a hold of me at home (I’m mainly on the computer, and yeah, I have dial-up connection. I’m so 2003). So once in a while, she’ll try contacting me at work. One of those times was yesterday. My office manager told me that my mom had called. So I dial my folks’ digits on my cell and when she answered, I said “what do ya want?” Yeah, that can be a typical greeting between me and mom. I was thinking maybe it had to do with my brother coming to visit this weekend. Actually, she started out with “I have a little bit of bad news...” OK, who died? was my next thought. She proceeds to tell me that my uncle Paul, my dad’s youngest brother (he comes from a family of 12 kids) was diagnosed with Lou Gerhig’s. She had told me that he was having symptoms with his legs and he was having whatever was causing it checked out.

When Technology Fails Us
Fri, July 11, 2008 @ 4:06PM
A lot has been said about the new iPhone, even by me on this blog and in the newspaper. Today the new iPhone 3G was released — don’t rush out to your local store because if you live in this area, you still don’t get to play with it. This blog isn’t really about the iPhone really, but it’s difficult not to look at its release as a good example of what can happen when technology fails us. In conjunction with the phone, Apple released its “Mobile Me” service, a re-branded version of a service that is designed to connect users’ devices — from the iPhone to your Mac or PC and so on. It’s a nice idea, but when it officially launched today there was a glitch in the scheme. The Associated Press is reporting outages on the service, leaving customers without access to what could be important data. Apple, along with partner AT&T, is struggling with the release of the new iPhone.
