Winter, books and TV
January 6, 2010 - Cindy Votruba
I think around the same time last year I was complaining about the winter. I was already tired of the cold and snow and it was like the first week of January. But of course, it’s Minnesota, it snows. And, since I’m in the southwestern part of the state, that snow blows.
But that’s where one can bundle up with a good book or another season of some TV show I missed the first time around. I just picked up season 5 of CSI (which will probably take me a few weeks to get through). Ross had bought seasons 1-3 of Bones and has already watched all of the episodes. I asked him how, and he retorts with “do you see any housework done?” As for books, I’ve read a couple of Sheila Roberts, which are heartwarming, kind of romance, kind of “girl power” kind of books. Then as Ross put up my newest bookcase and I started putting my books on the shelves, I realized that I really should start reading from my own library before loading up on the books from the library. Then there’s the plethora of books I’ve started buying from the Friends of the Library ongoing book sale, Goodwill in Willmar and Half Price Books. But as of lately, I’ve been finding some current best sellers. I picked up “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” for $3. And a lot of these books are in good condition. As I’ve said before, I don’t really buy books new, but I’ve sure been finding as close to new as possible these last couple of months.
And as usual, the Plum Creek Library system is doing its Winter Reading program. If you read 12 books and list them and turn them in at the library, you get a pen; 24 you get a bookbag. Granted I’ve been reading here and there, but I’m not sure I’ll get to 24 books from the library; maybe I’ll do the dozen.
