Batons of fire!

November 5, 2009 - Cindy Votruba
I cut my workday short yesterday as I worked on Sunday and found myself watching “Dr. Phil” that afternoon. The topic was “Pressure for Perfection” or something of the like and the man guest was this mother of a 10-year-old girl who wants her daughter to be a champion baton twirler. I didn’t think baton twirling was such a competitive sport anymore, but this mother was just nuts. She was having her daughter practice at least two hours a day in the stifling Florida heat, whether or not she wanted to. There was video of the mother hollering at the girl about how she had to be the best and keep smiling even though she was sick and tired of running around with a baton. Apparently the struggle between mother and daughter (and even the coaches) was putting a strain on the mother’s marriage. I was ready to smack the woman with a baton myself.

But after listening to Olympic gold medalist Dominique Moceanu and her problems with her domineering dad and a guy who was an up-and-coming champion inline skater whose father injected him with steriods and ended up getting a six-year prison sentence, the mother seemed to cowtow a bit, realizing she wanted to have a good relationship with her daughter, not resentment.

And all that in just under an hour!
