September 3, 2009 - Per Peterson
Oh, those wacky teens. What they won’t do for a little parental payback. In Montana, a 15-year-old girl wanted to get back at dad for punishing her after she missed her curfew. But instead of giving him the cold shoulder, she tried to poison him with Jell-O with a dash or two of lamp oil. When asked what she thought would happen, she simply said, “that he’d have diarrhea and stuff.” The teen appeared before a district judge Monday via video conferencing. She pleaded guilty to a charge of simple assault, a lesser count than the felony attempted aggravated assault charge she first faced, the AP reported. Court records say in early June, the girl made Jell-O tainted with lamp oil and twice over a period of three days tried to get her father to eat it. The girl was placed on probation until she turns 18. She will also enter treatment for chemical dependency. There are certainly worse things teens can do to their parents, to get back at them for doing nothing more than being parents, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that teens can be pretty nasty when they want to be. The very act of poisoning someone, even if it is just lamp oil, is scary. And who knows, had he eaten it, it could’ve caused some kind of deadly reaction; now we have a homicide on our hands. Moral of the story? Let your kids read this, see their reaction and then decide.
