Christmas, shrismas — THIS is the most wonderful time of the year
September 2, 2009 - Per Peterson
There is no better time of the year than right now, for a number of reasons. First, and most importantly, football’s back — high school, college, the NFL, it’s all back. The high school season kicks off Thursday, the college season Saturday and the NFL regular season in a little more than a week. Nothin’ better. Secondly, the weather — not that we’ve had to sweat out a sultry summer. In fact, it’s been cooler than normal the last few weeks — more like mid- to late September weather. With apologies to all you sunbathers out there, there’s nothing worse than 95 degrees with humidity — sucks the life right out of you. Give me mid-60s any day. The cooling temps means fall colors are also right around the corner, setting the perfect backdrop for all those football games and the pick-up ones we amateurs play as well. Then when those leaves fall, the kids can play in the piles we rake up. This weather will last into and throughout October. The only thing that can ruin it is an early-season snowstorm. And in Minnesota, that could very well happen. So enjoy the next two months of football and fall-like weather, especially in October when there’s about a two-week window of weather perfection — not too hot, not too cold; no mud like we deal with in spring; no ice like we put up with in winter; no mosquitoes or ticks like we have to fight off in summer. Thirdly, the kids are gone and back to school. Why is this so great? If you have to ask, you’re obviously not a parent. But for parents out there, isn’t it nice knowing your kid(s) are in school, not home being bored, maybe messing up the house? Isn’t it nice knowing you don’t have to haul them around anymore? We all love our kids, but hearing “there’s nothing to do” gets old pretty damn quick.
