Are you Shakespearienced?

August 20, 2009 - Cindy Votruba
I’ll admit it, I’m an illiterate when it comes to Shakespeare. Since 2002, the Marshall Area Stage Company has put on its annual “Shakespeare in the Park” production at the Liberty Park bandshell. The organization says it’s the one show where it loses money as it’s free admission and it still has to pay the director, buy materials if necessary and on occasion, may buy the refreshments to sell.

This year, MASC used some of its patron money to buy Renaissance costumes, which will give it that “authentic” feel. A few of the actors will even have more than one costume. Every year when MASC does its patron drive, people have been generous. With that money, MASC has been able to buy equipment, buy a trailer to move set pieces and other items.

Anyway, on to this year's show “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” I have some idea of the plotline. Don’t ask me what the lines the actors recite have to do with it. But the actors do a good job in portraying the story that you don’t really need to follow it too much (plus there’s usually a synopsis in the program).

And what’s amusing to me this year is watching Ross sing some light-hearted song while brandishing a fencing foil.
