Watching Crain's a pain

June 14, 2009 - Per Peterson
This is, OK, should be, the final straw for Ron Gardenhire to take Jesse Crain’s jersey and burn it in a trash can right in front of him, then wish the reliever good luck at Triple-A. Crain gave up two three ninth-inning singles around an intentional walk to ruin a strong start by Scott Baker and uncharacteristic decent outing by receiver Luis Ayala in Sunday’s series finale against the Cubs. Gardenhire, who isn’t having his finest season as manager of the Twins, recently sent down starter Anthony Swarzak after seven shutout innings in his Saturday start. Thanks for the seven innings of shutout ball, Anthony, but we’re sending you down to make room for Glen Perkins, K? Perkins, by the way, was quickly climbing the ranks of all time overrated Twins pitchers before he got hurt. Swarzak was brilliant against the Cubs, and was then rewarded with a demotion. Crain, meanwhile will probably be back on the hill again Tuesday or Wednesday. That’s like letting a bank robber out of jail early — you know he’ll strike again. Gardenhire needs to start making some good moves, settle on some kind of batting order and keep thanking God he’s got the best catcher to ever put on a Twins uniform. This team should be better than .500. And if they don’t get there and stay there soon, Gardenhire must go.
