April 28, 2009 - Cindy Votruba
I got a chance to see what is considered one of the best barbershop choruses in Minnesota Sunday morning. The Great Northern Union Chorus was doing a weekend of concerts. It performed one Saturday night in Appleton (I didn’t go to that one because I wanted to see SMSU’s “The Secret Garden” instead; glad I did). On Sunday, the group was going to sing at the 9 a.m. and the 11:05 a.m. services at Calvary Baptist Church in Willmar. So I got up early to join Ross at the church. Services were cut short to allow for the chorus to sing a few songs. Right after the group was announced, it looked as if it didn’t get the memo as nobody was coming. Eventually 75 men in nice black tuxes filed up the aisles and arranged themselves on the altar. Then they opened their mouths and started to sing. Man, did their sound fill the church.
But they weren’t done once the service was over. The group was asked to perform a few more songs during fellowship, including the Turtles’ song “Happy Together.”
I wanted to stop at Wendy’s on the way back to Marshall. It was 10:30 and usually the restaurant is open at that time. We go to the door and it was locked. Ross knocked on the window. The girl who came to the door said that no one else came in to work and she didn’t know when or IF the Wendy’s would open. Don’t know about you, but I would’ve started trying to call people to see if anyone was available. There probably would be someone who may need the hours, but who knows. Hope the restaurant was able to open later.
