Is October here yet?

April 5, 2009 - Per Peterson
There are a lot of things to appreciate in Minnesota, and our weather is one of them. Nothing beats a cool fall day in early October. In fact, as far as I’m concerned, there’s really only one week out of the year that has perfect weather, and it usually falls in the middle of October. There are also a lot of things to dislike about Minnesota, and our weather is one of them — especially a snowstorm in April. Snow is a funny thing in this state. A few inches on Dec. 20 is welcomed, and even expected. Everyone likes a white Christmas. Some even dream of it apparently. Snow in April, however, not only is not welcomed, it can drive even the most hearty Minnesotan crazy and force them to ask themselves, “Why do I live here?” Saturday’s snowfall, for me, was an unwelcome burden. It caused headaches driving, and just when everything was drying up out in the country, wham! we get five inches of wet heavy snow to ruin it all and send us back in time a bit, at least as far as rural driveways are concerned. I hate winter, as many of you do, but this latest storm reminded us just how fickle weather in this state can be. Two weeks ago it was, like, 60 degrees was it not? Now this. I’m not planning on moving from Minnesota, letting winter chase me out of the state I’ve lived my entire life in, but what happened during the weekend does make one think about it. Thank God for that one week in October.
