January 26, 2009 - Cindy Votruba
I went to Willmar Saturday to attend a barbershop chorus concert at Ridgewater College. Actually, the concert was the culmination of an all-day workshop sponsored by the West Central Conncection Chorus. More than 50 boys from eight schools took part in the event. They learned a couple of songs, a couple of impromptu quartets from St. Cloud Tech High School performed, the West Central Connection did three numbers, Sound Image did a few songs and the concert was topped off by a mass choir performance of “Hello, Mary Lou.”
OK, the reason I was there was to support Ross as he’s part of the West Central Connection Chorus. I also did a little shopping in Willmar. Got more Bath and Body Works merchandise (like I don’t have enough!) and bought a 24-pack of Dasani water. It was a good concert, just 50 minutes long.
Then a few of the guys retired to Applebee’s after the show. The conversation was mainly about, what else...barbershop choruses. The Chorus has its annual spring concert coming up in mid-April and I learned that one of the past guest quartets (or is it the one that’s coming this year?) has a big-time groupie. Yes, just one hardcore groupie. I’m thinking, “barbershop quartets have groupies? Why?” OK, they may not be the Rolling Stones or the Jonas Brothers, but I guess every genre has to have its own type of fan.
And since I’m going to April’s concert in Willmar and have now been to two of the Chorus’ concerts....does that make me a barbershop groupie?
