Time for pie!

January 20, 2009 - Cindy Votruba
During the years, I’ve taken photos of a principal getting doused with ice cream toppings, another principal being duct taped up to his eyeballs onto a piece of plywood, a music teacher being covered with Jello and another teacher sitting in a pool as she got pelted with ketchup, mustard and other condiments. Usually, the teacher or principal volunteers themselves to get hit by food or taped to a wall as a fund-raiser or an incentive for reaching a goal.

On Tuesday, I got the chance to take another photo of another person who graciously volunteered herself to be smacked with whipped topping pies because the students at Marshall Area Christian School reached a reading goal of more than 54,000 pages. Twenty kids who read 12 or more books this quarter got a turn to smear the pies into parent volunteer Sheri Gross’ face. Even those who didn’t get to put the pie in her face were cheering on and yelling “smear it in.” Just a little chaos for about eight minutes.

Next quarter’s goal for the MACS students is 75,000 pages. Wonder what the incentive will be?
