American Idol begins!
January 15, 2009 - Cindy Votruba
Tuesday began a new season of American Idol and yet again, I’ve become sucked in. Nothing like watching 10,000 or so wannabe singers from various parts of the country belting out Aretha, Michael Jackson (I swear “The Way You Make Me Feel” was sung by two different audtioners), and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” (that song should have a moratorium, along with anything by....you fill in the blank).
I’ve only watched about half of my tape from Tuesday’s show, but I did watch Wednesday in its entirity. AI went to the home of current American Idol winner David Cook, Kansas City, Mo. Here we saw the likes of Michael Nextwonder, who apparently has a few issues, writing songs about his mom and grandmother (eek!). Then there was the kid named Von who practically bellowed out “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” after coughing up a hairball. There was the kid who brought his own cheerleaders to no avail. But there were a few good ones from Wednesday, such as the music teacher who lost his wife to a heart condition and even his buddy to a point. There was Lil Rounds, who lived through a tornado. Even the girl who lived with her 93-year-old grandma who takes “crazy” pills was decent.
Not too many standouts yet. I should probably take some notes like those who submit their thoughts to the Web site www.televisionwithoutpity.com. Those comments range from snarky to almost tearing people apart. And most of them are written so cleverly that it makes me wish I could string a paragraph together like that.
Anyhoo, it’s a long road until the end of May when a new AI winner will be crowned. Guess I’ll be along for the ride.
