From Candyland to Moulin RougeI think prostitutes are glorified enough in movies. Top actresses such as Jane Fonda and Julia Roberts have played “ladies of the evening.” That’s such a small segment of the population, why is it such a lovely subject for an actress to portray? Yes, it has dramatic appeal, but I’m always disappointed when I read that another actress has taken another hooker role. Nicole Kidman played the cabaret performer and “courtesan” Satine in Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge,” a musical about a nightclub in France. The movie is full of gorgeous set decoration and elaborate costumes, probably what appealed to the Marshall High School girls who picked “Moulin Rouge” for a prom theme. I think they could have tried a little harder to pick a theme that evokes the kind of spectacle they were trying to achieve without picking a movie that involves an adult-oriented plot such as “Moulin Rouge.” What’s next, “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas?” “Pretty Woman?” Last year, the theme was “Candy Land,” which I agree with — kids should hang on to their youth and innocence a little longer.
