Lyndwood Bar StarsI put together the Step Back in Time column which runs Thursdays in the paper or Fridays if there’s no room in Thursday’s paper. One entry cracked me up recently. Former governor of Minnesota Wendell Anderson was in Marshall 25 years ago to attend a fund-raiser for Rep. Gary DeCramer. The fund-raiser was at the Lyndwood Ballroom. Little old Lynd, population 401 (at the time), is host to a former governor. Not only that, but Anderson was entertained by the Chimielewski Funtime Band, further cause for amusement for me. The governor isn’t the only big name that has visited Lynd. I didn’t hear him play in the ballroom, but I was in the bar in the1980s, when Steppenwolf was taking a break. A band member said he would introduce him to me, but I didn’t see the point. Steppenwolf is noted for the song, “Born to be Wild,” which was a major hit in 1968. In the late 1990s, Hall and Oates performed at a street dance in Lynd. The duo are noted for many hits in the 1970s and 1980s such as “Sara Smiles” and “She’s Gone.” I don’t think there was enough publicity prior to them coming, because the turnout wasn’t that great for a band of that magnitude. I think owner Richard Van Dyke has booked Joan Jett there also. She is noted for the song, “I Love Rock-n-Roll” from the early 1980s. Way back when, Lynd was noted for its dances. I think my parents have mentioned that the Six Fat Dutchmen, a famous polka band, played there in the 1930s.
