| | Crossing over to the dark sideOctober 13, 2008 - Cindy VotrubaThe last time I wrote about karaoke at Shay’s in my blog, I was still one who sat on the sidelines, watching my friends perform their versions of songs by Celine Dion or Eric Clapton. I have now since crossed over to the other side, albeit to sing a few ABBA songs with my friend Maureen as well as “Breathe” by Melissa Etheridge and most recently, “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac. And I survived. No one ran screaming from the lounge or out the door for a smoke break. In fact, I think we got a little “woo” after we warbled out “Landslide.” The deejay said Maureen and I made great song choices last Friday. Besides “Landslide,” we sang “Take A Chance” by ABBA, and Maureen did some Christina Aguilerra song. Will I ever attempt a solo? Only time will tell. It took a lot just to get me up in front of a microphone. I’ve seen people try songs that they think they know, but they then realize they only know the chorus. A prime example was when I was at college at UMD and there was some outdoors karaoke event. This guy went up to sing “Magic Carpet Ride” by Steppenwolf. He even encouraged people to sing along because “well, you all know it.” Of course, he stumbled over all the verses. But when it came to the chorus, well, he definitely knew that.... • By the way, I made a booboo in my last blog. The Josh Gracin concert at SMSU is on Thursday, Oct. 23. Silly me.
