Mattke Field magic?

October 5, 2008 - Per Peterson
Dare we call it Mattke Field magic? Or was it just an all-around superior performance that carried the Mustangs to one of their biggest wins in a decade Saturday? Maybe it was a little bit of both. In the last few years, beating a Winona State men's team in any sport has been no easy task… for anyone. Its basketball team has become dynasty-like and has made more national TV appearances than the Gophers in the last few years, and its football team won the Northern Sun title a year ago. But on Saturday, it was the Mustangs’ day thanks to a late touchdown pass and some pretty stout defense. The romantic in me wants to believe it’s homefield advantage settling in. The Mustangs have won twice at the New Mattke this year, including Saturday’s monumental victory that evened their conference record at 3-3. They (hopefully) will have plenty of big home wins during the next couple decades, but this is one of those that we’ll look back on in 10 years when we make our list of top 10 victories at the New Mattke. Of course it’s No. 1 now, but how long will it stay No. 1? Let’s hope this is the first of many big wins for the SMSU football team, and let’s hope the Mustangs can carry their newfound momentum into next week’s game against Augustana, a team the Mustangs have had plenty of difficulty with since they started playing them every year. The New Mattke is obviously a big-time recruiting tool for Coach Eidsness and the Mustangs, but wins like Saturday’s over last year’s conference champ also play a very big role in recruiting and helping to the corner when it comes to turning around a program desperately trying to break into the upper tier of a tough conference. Hats off to the Coach Eidsness, the entire coaching staff and all the players.
