Fans called best high school FB teams of 2008

September 28, 2008 - Per Peterson
Back in August, the Independent posted a poll online asking which high school would field the best football team this year. We’re now just over half way through the 2008 season, and it looks like you all know what you’re talking about. Thirty percent of respondents thought Tracy-Milroy/Balaton would have the best team, and indeed, the Panthers have once again been one of the most dominant teams in the area, and are fresh off a 36-0 rout of Ortonville. In second place in the poll was the Marshall Tigers at 23 percent — right again. Like the Panthers, the Tigers are undefeated and have also been pretty dominant at times. They’re coming off a 48-7 win against Windom and are now preparing for their homecoming game against Worthington. The team with the third most votes in the poll — Minneota (17 percent) is also 5-0 after a tight 19-14 win over Adrian on Friday. There you have it — the top three teams in the poll are the only teams in the area to win their first five games of the season. Maybe I’m over-estimating everyone’s knowledge here, I don’t know. Maybe it’s just that the Tracy and Marshall areas had the most voters chime in and people in Canby or Granite Falls just didn’t step up to vote. I’d like to think people from those two towns did vote, but voted with their brain, not their heart. It’s one thing to have allegiance to your school, but in the sake of a poll, it would be nice to think the voters are knowledgeable football fans who know what they’re talking about (i.e. people in Canby picking TMB instead of their Lancers). Either way, having nearly 1,100 people vote on the poll is cool — it lets us know you’re reading and that you care. And that’s all we ask.
