Front page frivolity
August 29, 2014 - Karin Elton
Well that was oddly fun — doing that ice bucket challenge this week. By now everyone in the world has taken the challenge, including toddlers and babies, which is not necessary. One hundred million dollars has been raised for ALS, which is great.
Independent news and sports staffers gathered behind the Marshall Radio building Thursday to get doused with water by Marshall DJs. First we poured water and ice on them. I poured a bucket full on someone whom I had never met and didn’t know her name. That was pretty weird. I felt a little guilty. I told her afterward she could do it to me for payback.
A couple weeks ago, I didn’t know what the ice bucket challenge was. Then I started seeing celebrities were having buckets of ice water poured on their heads. I hope they were at least standing on their lawns out in L.A. so the parched grass could get some water.
I didn’t expect the photo to wind up on the front page of the Independent. At any rate, it was fun to be a part of a national phenomenon — one that brought out everyone’s silly side.
