Dana Yost, editor

If you look up the word “editor” in the dictionary, you’ll see a photo of Dana Yost. At least in my dictionary. Yost has taken an indefinite leave as editor of the Independent. It is a great loss to the newsroom. I don’t know how he did it all these years. Editing, writing stories, columns, editorials, taking phone calls and being constantly interrupted by reporters asking questions. His fingers would fly across the keyboard, writing blogs, answering e-mails and the phone would ring and he would patiently and kindly take the call as well as respond to each reporter. He never brought his personal troubles to work and never snapped at employees or the public. That shows a lot of patience and self-control. As well as being a great writer and great editor, he was a great boss. He kept track of his employees’ annual review times, taught us Associated Press style rules and let the reporters go off on silly tangents during staff meetings. There used to be three editors at the Independent and that worked out better — it wasn’t such a strain and long hours for the editors. It’s a tough job and not everyone can do it. But he did it well and I wish him well.

I had the great fortune to work for Dana a few summers ago as an intern and want to express my gratitude for all of his efforts and time spent at the Independent.

He has the abilities and insights to work at any major news organization in the world. They all would be lucky to have him. But, Dana chose to dedicate his skills to the community, because it's where he grew up and what he cared about the most.

In his stories and editorials, he addressed the most important questions we, as journalists, strive to answer. What does it mean? Why does it matter? How will it affect my readers?

For Dana, it was never about himself or winning awards or impressing anyone. The man has no ego.

He's always had you and your family in mind when putting out the paper.

Now, it's time to return the favor. The Independent's readers owe Dana a standing ovation. I hope we should all be so lucky to get an encore someday soon.

I surely can attest to Yost's patience. I spent a lot of my summer wondering if what I was writing made sense, or if the grammar and punctuation I was using was parallel to AP style. I found out quickly that I could always ask Yost without being snapped at. Working with the reporters and editors in his newsroom was more beneficial than I can probably site today and I can only hope that Yost returns quickly. He is truly a wonderful mentor and I have complete faith and trust that his staff learned from him well and will continue to put out quality news and papers in his absence. Andrea Sanow

The Independent is a wonderful newspaper in an era where cable talk shows don't so much report the news as try to "make points" on a range of topics from important to obscure. I have enjoyed the opinions expressed by Dana Yost although I don't always agree with them and in several exhcanges of e-mails on a topic found Mr. Yost to be interesting, to the point and willing to listen to other points of view. I do not know why he will be away but at a minimum I hope he will return from time to time with a guest editorial.
