August 16, 2013 - Samantha Downing
Unfortunately, today is my last day here at the Marshall Independent. I have had such an exciting summer, and I cannot believe it is already over. It's crazy how in the last couple months I have learned so much, yet I still feel like there is so much more to learn. The people I have worked with are truly phenomenal. They have always been there to answer all my questions and correct any mistakes in the kindest possible way. As much as I don't want my internship to end, I am excited for my senior year of high school to begin. I will be continuing my work in journalism as the school year begins. Danny West, Tom Wyatt-Yerka and I are starting a Digital Communications club with the high school. Danny is in charge of the videos, Tom-radio, and I will be doing the written articles. Our plan is to start a website for homecoming week. I think we have the potential to really do well with this new activity at MHS. The best part about my work here at the Independent is that it isn't ending when the summer is. I can continue to improve on my writing, interviewing and people skills in other activities. I have done a lot of college and career searching over the summer. I now know that I do want to pursue a career in the communications field, although I want something a little more scheduled than the sporadic newspaper life. Right now, my hopes are to go to Concordia-Moorehead and get a degree in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations, but obviously that is subject to change. This fall, I will be busy with applications, college visits and homework as I try to get in as many college credits as possible. Thank you to everyone who has read my articles and blogs throughout the summer!
