June 5, 2013 - Samantha Downing
This afternoon I will be interviewing for a feature on Upward Bound. This is a program that takes place every summer at SMSU to prepare high school students for post-secondary education. Only thirty five students are chosen to stay in the dorms and partake in six weeks of summer classes. According to their website, "The goal is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education". I find this program very interesting. My little sister will be a freshman at MHS this fall and is one of the participants. I personally believe these kids are amazing. They give up over thirty days of their summer to take classes- a sacrifice I don't think I could make. The only time they get to come home is on the weekends, and then only if they aren't embarking on one of their field trips. I am excited to go see how everything works out this afternoon.
