Enjoying ill health

October 24, 2012 - Stephen Browne
I've been sick since the middle of last week, and I think I'll take myself home to bed again.

It's something that's been going around. Stuffy head, a lot of coughing, and sleeping about 12 hours a day. So it's not all bad, just enough to justify staying home without feeling guilty, but not super painful.

Ironically, it came on the day I took myself and my children to the clinic for flu shots. My son also came down with it so we both went to the doctor.

For those of you with these symptoms, but no noticeable fever, let me save you the trouble of a visit. This is what the doctor said, it's viral, which means there's not much you can do except support therapy. Which means do what your grandmother told you to: rest, fluids, and an over-the-counter decongestant. Put an extra pillow under your head to promote drainage.

And by the way, do get that flu shot. It's neither expensive nor painful. Young children get the nasal spray, which delighted mine.

Look into the pneumonia vaccine. For those of us who aren't getting any younger... well you know what they call pneumonia, "the old man's friend."
