The end is near — and so is Cancun

I’m always bemused at how companies will tie in sales to random holidays such as Presidents Day. I received a notification today in my e-mail box urging people to visit Cancun, Mexico, to mark the end of the Mayan calendar Dec. 21.

"CELEBRATE THE END OF AN ERA — AND THE BIRTH OF A NEW AGE IN CANCUN Cancun invites locals and guests to think and behave differently by exploring the evolution of humanity, and redefining our experiences in the land of the Mayans. Guests visiting Cancun will share in the destination’s renewal, offering more than just sun and beaches, but also culture, gastronomy, adventure and self-renewal."   In other words, all you hippy-dippy New Agers and survivalists should travel to Cancun, not for the sun and surf, but because the Mayan calendar stops on Dec. 21
