UMD football coach chats about Beau Bofferding
August 27, 2012 - Matt Dahlseid
I just got off the phone with Minnesota-Duluth head football coach Bob Nielson. I talked to him for a preview I'm working on for the SMSU season opener against the Bulldogs. I also got in a few questions about former Marshall standout running back Beau Bofferding, who's starting his freshman year up at UMD. You can read the preview in Thursday's edition of the paper, but I figured I'd share with you what Nielson said about Bofferding right now because I'm such a nice guy.
First off, he said he's going to be redshirting Bofferding this season, so we won't be seeing "Big Play Beau" Thursday at Mattke. Well, we may see him, but he won't be playing. Nielson did have plenty of good things to say about Bofferding though, so here you go:
"He’s made great progress. He’s a great young man and we’re excited to have him as a part of our program. He’s going to be a great player down the road."
About Bofferding's role on the team:
"We’re playing him as a slot receiver in our system. He's a guy we’re trying to get the ball to in the perimeter in our passing game, but also utilizing him in our running game a little bit. Certainly, we’ll lean on his skills as a returner too. He’s a guy we see helping us in many different facets."
About some teams not recruiting Bofferding because of his size:
"I’ve learned over the years that while size is one factor, the most important factor that you can find is guys that can make plays. He’s a playmaker. He has great speed. Even though he’s small, he’s physical and he’s shown his durability as a high school player. I think all of those things translate really well to being a good college player."
