Coming soon to a TV Guide near you!

July 26, 2012 - Stephen Browne
Tonight I'm going to make it a point to catch "Sullivan and Son" on TBS.

I caught the first two episodes shown back-to-back last Thursday and thought it was kind of fun. But I didn't want to review it on the strength of two episodes because it might not live up to the beginning. By tomorrow I'll be more confident about recommending it or not.

It stars Steve Byrne as an Irish-Korean-American corporate lawyer who goes home to Pittsburgh when his father, a bar owner, wants to retire. Unwilling to see the bar pass out of the family, he buys it from his parents and runs it.

And by the way, at 30 he also moves back in with his loud Irish father and fierce Korean mother.

It looks like it has some promise, un-PC as all getout to begin with, but I'll know more later.

There's been talk it's a "Cheers" ripoff, but this feels different somehow. Of course the suits could panic and decide to make it one rather than try a new direction.

It makes me wonder, how many of us have had the dream of being self-employed as a bar owner?

I've worked bartending of course, who hasn't? But it's not exactly a job for a guy with small children. You're off when they're in school, and working when they're home.

We'll see, I haven't followed a sitcom in years but this one might grab me.
