Parise and Suter...why do we care?

July 5, 2012 - Per Peterson
The last few years in the professional sports world have included some life-altering decisions. Of course, there’s LeBron taking his talents to South Beach, and this week, Minnesota was involved in another “decision.” Two actually. Zach Parise and Ryan Suter both inked identical deals with the Wild this week, ended days of speculation as to what state these two hockey studs will take THEIR talents to. Indeed, these are all life-altering decisions ... for them! Why do WE care so much? Are our lives that empty that we have to cling to the decisions made by pro athletes. Well, yah, they are. At least compared to a pro athlete’s life. Maybe empty isn’t the right word. A better choice might be uneventful. Compared to these athletes, our lives are quiet and boring. I know, I know, “speak for yourself,” you say. But there are a lot of people like me out there who follow these moves more than we’d like to admit. Sports, as we know them, are a delicious diversion to our little lives — that’s why we follow teams and cling to these decisions like we would to our child’s choice of college. We followed the Parise/Suter watch because we want our team to win so we can look forward to the season. The Wild are good for helping sports fans get through our long winters — they don’t help us get through our lives, just portions of them. That’s why we love and cling to free agency periods, to follow players and see how our teams come out. So I’m cutting myself some slack for all the attention I’ve paid to the Parise/Suter soap opera this week — not because my life is dull, quiet and void of intrigue (OK, my life IS dull, quiet and void of intrigue), but because I’m a fan who sometimes could use a good diversion.
