B is for Bachmann
November 23, 2011 - Karin Elton
I’m not a fan of Michele Bachmann’s — she’s said too many weird things — but for her most recent media controversy I have to say I agree with her.
She appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s late night talk show on NBC this week and his house band, The Roots, played an inappropriate song as she walked to her seat. The band played the opening notes of a 1985 Fishbone song called "Lyin' Ass B----," according to news reports.
The Fishbone song stuck in Bachmann’s craw. I also think that it was pretty rude and disrepectful and Bachmann deserves an apology.
It could be a generational thing — that the B word isn’t as negative as I think it is. I completed my college education when I was in my early 30s and my girlfriends were a few years younger than me. They regularly threw that word around.
Maybe women saying it to each other is like when black guys call each the N word — another word that I absolutely can’t say — it takes away the sting. But for sure men calling women the B word is just wrong.
I don’t think Fallon knew what song was going to be performed for Bachmann, but he should apologize anyway.
