At half: Upper Iowa 17, SMSU 14

October 22, 2011 - Joe Brown
Trailing 14-7 after the first quarter, a 32-yard field goal by Steven Sandoval has put Upper Iowa ahead of Southwest Minnesota State 17-14 as the teams head into halftime.

With quick passes and a speedster in the backfield in CHris Smith, the Peacocks have been able to move down the field against the Mustangs. Smith scored Upper Iowa's first touchdown in the first quarter, and quarterback Cole Jaeschke tied the game with a nine-yard touchdown toss to Lucas Hefty with 4:36 left in the half.

For SMSU, Tyler Peschong has done most of his damage on the ground with three runs for 30 yards and a score. He also threw a four-yard touchdown in the flat to fullback Calvin Kosminskas for the game's first score.

But for the most part, the Mustangs have struggled on offense with 85 yards on the ground, compared to 184 for Upper Iowa. Coming into the game, the Peacocks were ranked 13th in the NSIC in rushing yards allowed per game, and a conference-worst 21 rushing touchdowns allowed. In the air, Peschong has struggled to gain a rhythm, going 4 of 12 passing.

Upper Iowa starts the second half with the ball.
