'Why?'

July 22, 2011 - Per Peterson
Sometimes you run across stories so bizarre, so out there, that you can't even shake your head. You just sit there, mesmerized, reading them and re-reading them, not even close to being able to comprehend why people do what they do. This is one of those stories: According to the Associated Press, a 29-year-old Connecticut mother is charged with forcing her 4-year-old son to drink beer and giving beer and cocaine to her 10-month-old daughter. The Connecticut Post reported that Juliette Dunn was arrested on June 28 after a neighbor flagged down police and told them the woman was feeding beer to her children at the Success Village playground in Bridgeport, the AP said. Dunn and a 33-year-old companion, Lisa Jefferson, were arrested and charged with assault and risk of injury to a minor. Dunn ordered the boy to chug the 40, witnesses say, and she did it at a playground. She didn't even try to conceal this sick act. Both kids tested positive for alcohol at a local hospital and the 10-month old tested positive for cocaine. Dunn and Jefferson are both being held in lieu of $100,000 bonds. It's impossible to know what was going through this woman's head at the time of the incident, but it's a pretty safe bet she was high on something - probably the rest of the cocaine she didn't give to the 10-month-old. Whether or not that's the case, no excuses on this one. We see hundreds of stories come across the wire every day. Some make us chuckle, others make us think, still others make us tear up a little. This one just made me ask, "why?" That's a question that has no answer.
