Holes in my theory
October 24, 2010 - Per Peterson
There are certain times in a father’s life when dads just have to suck it up and realize their daughter is growing up. Such a time came for me Saturday when I gave the consent for a stranger to drill holes in ears and plug those holes with a metal spike. I get it, she’s a girl. All girls eventually reach a point when the “girl” takes over and they desire to do more girlie, grown-up things. I had been putting it off for a while, knowing that once she gets it done, it will soon be onto the next thing. I don’t even wanna know what that is, but my guess is it involves a boy. That, however, is still at least 10 years down the road. It spoiled my theory, however, that she would eventually forget about getting her ears pierced. That didn't happen, and I've realized that she's at that point in her life when some of the decisions she makes are not going to include or have anything to do with dad, much like the development of a social life where she would rather spend time with her friends than me. It's close now — her choosing between me and her friends — but soon, it won't even be a contest I'm sure. I'd like to believe I would always be No. 1 to her, but more and more I'm taking a back seat to her friends. Dads shouldn’t begrudge their daughters certain things just because they don’t want to see them grow up too fast; that’s commonplace, but it’s selfish, too. So I said go ahead, get them pierced, as long as you keep them clean. There’s also a health issue involved here; the last thing we want is for some oozy infection to set in. Keeping her ears clean, I’ll keep telling myself, is a good way for her to learn responsibility. She knows if she doesn’t her ears will start to hurt and she’ll probably end up regretting the decision. To date, I don’t regret letter her get hear ears pierced — I suppose it’s part of being a little girl. As long as she knows her ears are the only place she will be allowed to pierce.
