Playoff-bound Twins stinking it up
September 28, 2010 - Per Peterson
The Twins, for as good as they have been this year, are embarassing themselves. Entering Tuesday’s game, they were 1-4 since clinching the American League Central. Granted, this is a banged-up team and some of the regulars are getting some much-needed rest, but scoring hasn’t been the problem the last week, pitching has. Remember, the same pitchers who are getting battered around by the likes of Jarrod Dyson and Josh Fields are going to be the same pitchers taking the hill against the likes of Derek Jeter or Evan Longoria pretty soon. Tuesday night, Kevin Slowey was yanked Tuesday after 1 2/3 innings. He gave up a dinger to a September call-up who hits home runs by accident. Starter Carl Pavano looked ordinary in his last start as well. All the starters have of late, and the ’pen hasn’t fared much better, giving up leads on a regular basis. Resting starters is understandable, but the Twins still have a legitimate shot at homefield advantage throughout the American League playoffs. It’s time Ron?Gardenhire, who should finally get crowned A.L. Manager of the Year this year, work some regulars back into the lineup to get them back into the groove, back in rhythm, and it’s time for him to sit down with these pitchers and figure out what the problems are. If not, it’s going to be another first-round ouster.
