Fun with fonts

August 5, 2010 - Cindy Votruba

As we were getting used to our new operating system at the paper, we were told by the man who installed the new computers that some fonts will not work (which includes quite a few bolded ones) and may cause problems. For the "catch" line for our articles, we were using a bold font. Oops. And I experienced that this evening as I was working on the front page and jump page. All of a sudden, what was a word became something that looked kind of Hebrew or some other language. And it couldn't be deleted and fixed with a new safe, font. It had even occurred in the archived front pages from this past week, so I couldn't just "cut and paste" a new "catch" line. Sigh. But I found usuable catch line, stuck with a safe font and went on my way. As soon as we get through the bugs of the new system and redo some of the design things we're used to, the paper will be back to normal. Just as long as I don't go crazy in the meantime.
