These birds have flown

July 7, 2010 - Deb Gau
For the past three weeks or so I've been keeping an eye on an unusual robin's nest near the Independent office. Maybe "unusual" isn't really the right word for it, it's more like a nest in an unlikely location, only about four feet off the ground in a little spruce tree by the parking lot. I can see it right at eye level whenever I pull into a certain parking space.

It's been fascinating to check up on the nest every once in a while. I got to watch the progress from nesting mother to naked baby birds to fluffy, buggy-eyed fledglings without binoculars or anything. My car might as well have been a duck blind, too - the robins paid me no attention as long as I stayed inside.

The hardest part was not saying anything about it, for fear somebody would go and disturb the nest. But now it's been empty for a good four or five days, so it seems safe to mention. I do feel a little disappointed at not getting to see the babies fly away, though.
