Cheap shots?

It’s been a while since I had to take a kid in to get immunizations shots. My twin girls needed their seventh grade shots, so I took care of that today. They needed a tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis vaccine and I threw in a chicken pox for good measure since the one they had when they were infants has laid an egg apparently.

I’m not sure of the Gardisil shot, the one for human papillomavirus, so I didn’t get that for them. It’s too new. Also, I find the commercial offensive. It’s grammatically incorrect. They should say, “I want to be one fewer,” not “I want to be one less.” If you can count something, like people, it’s fewer. All those grocery store signs saying “10 items or less” are incorrect! The nerve! I sense the commercial people deliberately ignored the laws of grammar because “I want to be one less” sounds better than “I want to be one fewer.” But what are they teaching these young girls? That it’s OK to promiscuously throw around bad grammar?

While we waited for our shots, the girls used their time to critique me from head to toe. My eyebrows need plucking, my white shirt is too short and has stains on it, my Capri pants are too youthful for someone my age. I thought my brown and tan bracelet would be acceptable because one of them made it. But no. The wooden beads are round and clash with the stripes on my pants.

The girls gave me a real “shot in the arm” for my self-esteem level. A confidence booster, you might say.

To make matters worse, I was the one that got stuck with the bill from their shots!

Being someone who was the ****hest thing from promiscuous, At 33 I can still count the number of people i've been intimate with, and finding out while at age 31 and pregnant that I would have to have a hysterectomy due to invasive cervical cancer-I support this shot 100%. Especially since they almost had to deliver my daughter early for my surgery-and then there was the six weeks after that I couldn't care for my kids due to 10 lb. weight restriction and other issues. Being pregnant saved my life.I wouldn't have gone in for my exam otherwise so remember the shot isn't a cure forr it-you still need your checkups and getting the shot doesn't mean your the town runaround either.

I'm ignoring the yeas or nays on the necessity of the vaccine; that's your call as a parent.

I loved this, though: "But what are they teaching these young girls? That it’s OK to promiscuously throw around bad grammar?"

Good job, Karin; way to solicit a chuckle. Ooops, I mean "elicit."

I also recommend the Gardisil shot. Some people have had mild side effects, like fainting, stomach aches and bruising around the shot area (is there a fancy term for this?) but the benefits totally outweigh these. There are so many strains of HPV and I think the shot only protects against a small number, but any little bit helps. Even better, I think that my shot was free because of insurance or otherwise...I can't remember. Bandwagon approach: most of my friends got the shot and so did I. We had to do the "booster/catch-up" shots. But we are all protected now! As far as your fashion goes, I like circles and stripes...everyone needs a little variety, let's be honest here.

I received the gardisil shot and I would strongly encourage you to do so for your girls. It really could be a life saver, and that has been proven. I suppose there may be long term effects that aren't known now, but by the time they figure out what those are, it may be too late for your girls. Remember, there is a small age window, and that shrinks immediately when girls become sexually active. Not that I think your 7th grade girls will have that issue anytime soon, but really, it's better now than never.
