Woks and superheroes

This morning I got a sneak peek into the new Hunan Lion restaurant. The old/current Hunan is a building away next to Sam’s Place on Main Street. The owners, Joe and Sarah Ektanitphong, bought a cool-looking old time bank building and are renovating it as a restaurant.

The inside is spacious and I’m eager to see how it will look when it’s done which is about a month and a half away. The owners showed me the kitchen — the prep room, the walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer. The main room in the kitchen will have the wok on which most of the food will be cooked. The wok range has seven burners.

The range is why I was there. Shipped from San Francisco, it took a dozen men to get it into the kitchen from the back parking lot. I took photos of the uncrating process and the lift-and-go-six-feet-and-rest process.

The Ektanitphongs’ little son chatted with me while we watched. He said someday he will be that big so he could help carry things. In fact, he said, he will be able to jump on buildings and lift cars. I said, “Will you rescue people?” And he said he would. I said they will call you a hero. He said he will be a superhero. He’ll be able to lift things with just his finger, he said waggling his pointer finger.
